There are several steps to the successful harvesting of trees. First, trees are felled and extracted. Then, they are processed and loaded. The final step involves the transport of trees to a mill or shipping yard. This is accomplished using specific types of trucks. Three types of trucks provided by a Commercial Felling Dealer in St. Cloud MN are possum belly trailers, tree-length log trucks, and log-length log trucks.
Possum Belly Trailers
One type of truck is a possum belly trailer. This type of truck is used to transport trees that have been processed into chips. It can be open-top, which is loaded by a chipper or grinder with a conveyor belt and covered by a tarp, or rear-loading, which is loaded by a chipper with a chute. The possum belly trailer has added capacity for chips on the underside of the trailer that allows the trailer to achieve the full weight allowance. However, this can create a problem for uneven roads, as the ground clearance at the site of the added capacity area is only 14 inches.
Tree-Length Log Trucks
Tree-length log trucks are another type of truck. This type of truck is used to transport full-length logs and can be either fixed-length or stinger-steered. A fixed-length truck is a semi-trailer with bunks rather than a box. Beams at the floor area are used to support the bunks. A stinger-steered truck is a trailer with a fifth wheel that contains a log bunk that can rotate. The fifth wheel is connected to the trailer via a telescoping bar and reach bar.
Log-Length Log Trucks
The third type of truck is a log-length log truck. This type of truck is used to transport log-length material and is usually a straight truck with a trailer. The straight truck often has a loader on the rear for loading logs onto the truck. When loading logs onto a log-length truck, they are usually indexed. This means that they are loaded butt to top, allowing the weight capacity to be maximized.
